What actually is Router’s Firmware?

Each digital device needs Operating system to run all its programs and commands, Router’s Firmware is basically that operating system. Each router firmware is specifically designed to run on your specific make and model, unless its running on some open source firmware such as DD-WRT.

Who can provide Firmware upgrades?

Usually, your router manufacturer will provide firmware updates for your specific make and model of router, via their website, or via a tool/section within the administrative console of your router (typically accessible via a web browser). Upgrades must be approved by your ISP for compatibility with its systems. For the average home user, upgrades to your router’s firmware are generally not necessary. If you are experiencing a problem with your router or if an upgrade introduces a feature you want installed in your router, you can request an upgrade. If an upgrade approved by your ISP is available, it will be offered to you through your router’s user interface.

How to connect to router support?

Send an email to router support. Request a software upgrade and provide your router’s serial number. A confirmation email response from router support notifies you whether there is an available upgrade and makes the upgrade available to your router. You can connect to ASUS support at ASUS Support

How to upgrade ASUS router firmware (

  1. Download latest ASUS router firmware from ASUS support website. On support website choose product as “Networking”.
  2. Give specific details for your router, in this example we will take RT-N66W as base.
  3. Click on Driver and Utility.
  4. Choose your operating system from “Please select OS” dropdown. On selection, it will show latest utilities and Firmware updates available for selected OS.
  5. Click on Firmware section download button and one Zip file will be downloaded to your computer. Unzip the downloaded file and keep it at desired location on your computer.
  6. Open web Browser like chrome and type into address bar. It will ask for your user name and password. To see steps for login into Admin, click here.
  7. Click the firmware version link on the configuration page.
  8. Click the “Choose File” button.

  9. Choose the downloaded firmware file, then click open button.
  10. Click “Upload” button.
  11. Please wait for a few minutes to complete.
  12. The update is complete.
Note: It is recommended to restore to factory default settings by pressing 5 seconds on the bottom of the wireless router after doing a firmware update.
